Sri Ganga Sthothram by Sri Adishankaracharya – Lyrics & meanings

|| Jai Sriman Narayana ||

My humble salutation to Goddess Sri Ganga, who is the Goddess of all the deities/Sureshwari, you are the provider of liberation to  Thribhuvana/three worlds with your sacred water course and its wave.  You are unblemished, dwells in the matted hair locks of Lord Shankara/Shankaramouli Viharini, I shall sincerely meditate upon your lotus feet.

My humble salutation to Goddess Sri Bhageerathi, who is the provider of eternal bliss/Sukhadhayini and whose splendor of her water course is described in the sacred scriptures, I am unfortunate to know your magnificence due to my ignorance, Oh! Kripamayi/compassionate mother, kindly protect me.

My humble salutation to Goddess Sri Ganga who originates from the lotus feet of Lord Hari/Haripadhya Tharangini, and elegantly flow through the glaciers, your waves has the resemblance to moon as well as precious pearls.  Oh! Mother, kindly remove the burden of my sins and shower your grace to cross the ocean of Samsara.

My humble salutation to Goddess Sri Ganga, whoever devour the sacred water of you would obtain Paramapadham,  Oh! Mother, Oh! Gange, whoever sincerely devoted to you would never have the fear of Yama.

My humble salutation to Goddess Sri Ganga, Oh! Janhavi,  you are gracefully moving through the highest peaks and creates your watercourse in the middle of the three worlds, Oh! Bhishma Janani/Mother of Bhishma, Oh! Munivarakanye/daughter of Sage Jahnu, your presence brings prosperity in the three worlds/Pathithodharini.

My humble salutation to Goddess Sri Ganga, who flows elegantly like a young maiden with great enthusiasm, you are a wish fulfilling Kalpatharu to the Universe, whoever prostrates before your lotus feet would never fall into grief or miseries.

My humble salutation to Goddess Sri Ganga, whoever recites your glories and take a dip in your holy water will not have rebirth, Oh! Jahnavi, you are the protector of your passionate devotees from the hellish torture/Narakanivarini, oh! Supreme Mother, you are the destroyer of impurities in your devotees/Kalushavinashini.

My humble salutation to Goddess Sri Ganga, Victory to Goddess Jahnavi ! Victory to Goddess Jahnavi ! I have got purified with your sacred waters and your compassionate glance, your lotus feet it worshipped by Lord Indra, your feet is decked with his crown of Lord Indra while he prostrates before you,  you are the provider of happiness/Sukhadhe and auspiciousness/Shubhadhe to your servants who are surrendered at your lotus feet/Bhruthyasharanye.

My humble salutation to Goddess Sri Ganga, Oh! Bhagavathi, kindly remove my illnesses/Rogam, sorrows/Shokam, grief/Thapam, sins/Papam and all the impurities of mind, you are the provider of prosperity to the three worlds, you are the marvelous garland of the Earth/Vasudhahare, you are my safe haven in the world of Samsara.

My humble salutation to Goddess Sri Ganga, Oh! Alakanandhe, Oh! Paramanandhe/provider of immense bliss, Oh! Karunamayi/compassionate mother who is worshipped by grief stricken people/Katharavandhye, kindly listen to my prayers and be gracious, living on this sacred river bank is equivalent to residing in glorious Sri Vaikundham.

My humble salutation to Goddess Sri Ganga, Oh! Mother it would be treated as immense fortune to live as a Kamada/tortoise, or Meena/fish in your holy waters or live like a weak chameleon on your river bank, or it is perfect to be an unclean or pitiable person who lives on your sacred river bank, instead of being a King or person born in superior clan.

My humble salutation to Goddess Sri Ganga, Oh! Bhuvaneshwari/ Goddess of the Universe, Oh! Punye/personification of auspiciousness, Oh! Dhanye, Oh! Devi who is the in water form and Munivarakanye/ daughter to Sage Jahnu, It is definite that whoever recites your glories would become successful.

My humble salutation to Godess Sri Gange, whoever venerates you with utmost faith and devotion would remain happy and attain liberation from the cycles of birth and death; it is sweet like nectar verses composed in Panjjatikameter, which could provide eternal bliss.

Thus ends the glorious verses of Gangasthothram which is the essence of purity and capable to provide happiness and all that desired to her worshiper,  it was composed by Sri Shankara who is the servant of Lord Shankara.
